Funded PhD opportunities in the UK 2023 at the Â鶹´«Ã½

Funded PhDs across sciences, arts, humanities and social sciences. Study for your postgraduate research degree.

13 January 2023

Will 2023 be the year you start your fully funded PhD? The Â鶹´«Ã½ is inviting applications for research degree study from both UK and international applicants across all its subject disciplines.

Deadline for applications is 27 Feb 2023 at 16:00 (UCT/GMT).

Applications must be co-produced with a potential supervisor from the Â鶹´«Ã½.

What subjects can I study for my funded PhD in Brighton?

Our academic schools are each offering a wide range of opportunities.

  • School of Applied Science
  • School of Architecture, Technology and Engineering
  • School of Art and Media
  • School of Business and Law
  • School of Education
  • School of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • School of Sport and Health
  • Brighton and Sussex Medical School

Through the links below you can find out more about the schools, their disciplinary areas, specialisms, facilities, and the academic staff who work as supervisors within them.

Our application website for the 2023 Studentships details the strategic areas that each school is supporting as part of the scheme. Depending on school, discipline and academic tradition, these may be areas of interest or specific project titles.

As a successful applicant you will demonstrate that you have a clear and achievable project that can form part of the strategic direction of the school. You will have the initial support of an academic member of the school, who will work as one of the supervisors on the project. You will have all necessary qualifications by the start date and the right to study in the UK.

Please explore the links to find out more and apply.

Is the Â鶹´«Ã½ the right place for my funded PhD doctoral studies?

The Â鶹´«Ã½ fosters research careers and will provide doctoral training, attentive and expert supervision and access to all the requirements you need to develop an internationally-worthy research project.

Earlier this year, the Â鶹´«Ã½ celebrated its performance in the Research Excellence Framework (REF2021). Following the assessment of scores of research outputs and research impact case studies, we had research rated as 'world-leading' in all ten units of assessment we entered, covering a diverse range of subject areas. We are dedicated to developing this quality work with new students.

How to apply for your funded PhD

You will be expected to approach a member of the Â鶹´«Ã½'s academic staff to supervise your research degree. Academic interests and contact details for research staff are available through the links below. Together you will then develop a research proposal and other material for the application.

You, the student, will be responsible for submitting the application through the university's application portal.

As part of the application, you will identify the supervisor you have been working with on the application for the funded PhD. Your potential supervisor will then support and champion the proposal through the application system.

The following links will explain and guide you through the process
