Our application website for the 2023 Studentships details the strategic areas that each school is supporting as part of the scheme. Depending on school, discipline and academic tradition, these may be areas of interest or specific project titles.
As a successful applicant you will demonstrate that you have a clear and achievable project that can form part of the strategic direction of the school. You will have the initial support of an academic member of the school, who will work as one of the supervisors on the project. You will have all necessary qualifications by the start date and the right to study in the UK.

Is the Âé¶¹´«Ã½ the right place for my funded PhD doctoral studies?
The Âé¶¹´«Ã½ fosters research careers and will provide doctoral training, attentive and expert supervision and access to all the requirements you need to develop an internationally-worthy research project.
Earlier this year, the Âé¶¹´«Ã½ celebrated its performance in the Research Excellence Framework (REF2021). Following the assessment of scores of research outputs and research impact case studies, we had research rated as 'world-leading' in all ten units of assessment we entered, covering a diverse range of subject areas. We are dedicated to developing this quality work with new students.
How to apply for your funded PhD
You will be expected to approach a member of the Âé¶¹´«Ã½'s academic staff to supervise your research degree. Academic interests and contact details for research staff are available through the links below. Together you will then develop a research proposal and other material for the application.
You, the student, will be responsible for submitting the application through the university's application portal.
As part of the application, you will identify the supervisor you have been working with on the application for the funded PhD. Your potential supervisor will then support and champion the proposal through the application system.
