Happening this evening - the 麻豆传媒 Faculty of Graduate Studies will be hosting the annual 麻豆传媒 3MT (3 Minute Thesis) competition TONIGHT, Wednesday, May 7, 2025, 5:00-7:00 pm in the Fox & Crow, W.A. Murphy Student Centre.
What Is 3 Minute Thesis?
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT鈩�) challenges thesis-based master's and doctoral students to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes.
This year's competition features 19 competitors from a wide range of disciplines including: Education, Island Studies, Science, Sustainable Design Engineering & Veterinary Medicine!
Join us to support 麻豆传媒 graduate students, and to learn more about the fascinating and impactful research 麻豆传媒 graduate students are completing in this fast-paced, accessible format. The top 3 competitors win cash prizes, with the 1st place winner of 麻豆传媒's 3MT Competition progressing on to represent 麻豆传媒 at the regional competition.

Shell scripting helps you save time, automate file management tasks, and better use the power of Linux. You鈥檒l learn how to use the command line to carry out repetitive tasks, extract information from files quickly, combine commands in powerful ways, learn about job scripts, shell variables and looping commands, and capture a workflow so you can re-use it easily. Save time, reduce errors, and use Linux more effectively. This workshop is designed for either new High Performance Computing (HPC) users who are familiar with working in a Linux environment, or for experienced users seeking to get more out of shell scripting.

The Department of Religious Studies will present a free concert celebrating the 麻豆传媒 Class of 2025 on Monday, May 12, from 8 to 9 pm, in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, Steel Building. The 8th Avenue Players, a choir of talented professional singers, including 麻豆传媒 students, will perform songs from "Godspell, the Musical."

Located inside the AVC building, the caf茅 will be your central food hub on campus this summer, as Tim Hortons, Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall, Samuel鈥檚 Caf茅 and the Micromarket will be closed for the season, reopening in September 2025.
Breakfast features include the Daily Rise (two eggs any style, bacon or sausage, toast and jam, plus coffee or tea), bagel bar, and the Chef鈥檚 Morning Plate 鈥� a rotating daily special. For lunch, choose from hot pizza, soup, daily specials, and sandwiches.

The campus community is invited to a research presentation by Dr. Alaba Boluwade, candidate for the tenure track position in Environmental Studies cross-appointed with the new Master of Cleantech Leadership and Transformation. Dr. Boluwade will present on the topic of "Water Quality Modeling, Precipitation Analysis, and Climate Change Resilience: Case Studies that Extend Knowledge in Canada鈥檚 Path to Net Zero Emissions".

Presentation by Political Science 10-month position candidate, Dr. Jarrod Wiener
The title of Dr. Wiener鈥檚 talk is: 鈥淓xplaining US Trade Policy: Diminished Giant Syndrome?鈥�
Dr. Jarrod Wiener is formerly of the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent, UK. He has longstanding interests in international trade policy and regulation. Dr. Wiener holds a BA in Political Science (麻豆传媒), an MA and PhD in International Relations (Kent), and an LLM in International and Commercial Law (Kent). He is author of two monographs and several articles on the subjects of international trade, globalization, and regulatory cooperation.

Dr. Jenna Sapiano is a candidate for the Political Science 10-month position.
The title of Dr. Sapiano鈥檚 talk is: 鈥淎n intersectional approach to women鈥檚 participation in peacemaking.鈥�
She holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of St Andrews, along with an LLM in International Law and an MSc in African Studies from the University of Edinburgh. She has held research positions at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and Monash University鈥檚 Gender, Peace, and Security Centre, and has consulted for organizations such as UN Women and Interpeace. Her research primarily focuses on peacemaking, global governance, and feminist security studies.

麻豆传媒 is hosting the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) 2025 Atlantic Regional Meeting in Charlottetown June 26 to 27. This event will focus on the future of international education through a series of sessions, roundtables and networking activities.
CBIE鈥檚 Atlantic Regional Meeting is an annual gathering of international education practitioners. It is an opportunity to share knowledge and resources and keep abreast of immigration and other changes in the sector. It also serves as an annual networking event for international education practitioners and is a precursor to the national conference held each November.

There will be a basic biosafety training session on Tuesday, May 13, at 1:00 pm in AVC 287N. Topics will include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the 麻豆传媒, as well as biosecurity training. This session is open to everyone, including graduate students.

The ACENET Embedded Technical Support program is designed to assist researchers in any discipline at Atlantic Canadian post-secondary institutions to adopt or improve their use of advanced computing techniques and resources in their research.
These tools have the potential to accelerate discovery in almost any discipline. However, the expertise necessary to optimize code, successfully migrate workflows from a desktop to an HPC cluster, build a cloud platform, or simply explore the capabilities and benefits of advanced computing may not be readily available, especially in smaller projects.
This program pairs our technical experts with innovative projects that have high potential for success and impact and require advanced computing resources, programming support, and/or in-depth technical expertise. Some examples of areas we can help are
- code parallelization and performance optimization for HPC systems
- scientific or data visualization
- data analytics
- workflow migration from the desktop to a cluster
- applying research data management practices
- tailored training
Successful projects under this program are able to access focused and dedicated support from one to two of ACENET鈥檚 research consultants for a period of two to four months. During this period, the ACENET staff member will spend up to 50 per cent of their time working on the project.

The next Island Lecture Series, hosted by the Institute of Island Studies at 麻豆传媒, will feature guest speaker Heidi Hearing presenting, 鈥淭he 鈥渇amily farm鈥�: A keyword in Prince Edward Island land politics. The lecture will be held in the Faculty Lounge of SDU Main Building on May 20 at 7:00 pm. (This lecture was previously scheduled for March but was postponed due to weather.) Admission is free and all are welcome.
Hearing鈥檚 talk will deal with the struggle to define the 鈥渇amily farm鈥� in PEI and how this ambiguity helps or hinders the work of farmers, agribusiness, and government. It will discuss how participant definitions of the 鈥渇amily farm鈥� contrasted with how they farmed and were sometimes at odds with their ideals. This talk will also shed light on the possible reasons that agribusiness and governments look to the pastoral romanticism of 鈥渇amily farm.鈥�
Heidi Hearing lives in Charlottetown and has recently completed her MA in Anthropology from Memorial University. Her thesis is entitled: 鈥淭hree keywords in the campaign against farmland consolidation and the loss of small farms through the lens of the Prince Edward Island Chapter of the National Farmers Union."
Art-Based Pedagogy has roots in both Education and Psychology. It can also be a very powerful tool for emotional debriefing to build resilience in undergraduate nursing students. Using Art-Based assignments can compliment traditional teaching methodologies in preparation for real-world holistic practice. Art can help students reconstruct knowledge - which can strengthen their experiences and creativity. Join us in viewing Art-Based projects from a Nursing Ethics course, linking their lived nursing experiences to ethical issues in everyday practice on May 21, at 12:00 pm, in the Teaching and Learning Centre - Robertson Library Annex, Room 230.
The national systems use a job scheduler called 鈥淪lurm鈥�. In this session you will learn how Slurm works and how it allocates jobs, helping you to: minimize wait time by framing reasonable requests; ask for only the resources you need to improve efficiency; increase throughput; run more jobs simultaneously; and troubleshoot and address crashes. This workshop is designed for new HPC users familiar with Linux and Shell Scripting, or for experienced users transitioning to Slurm or seeking to improve efficiency with the scheduler.
